The Incarnation (3)- the centre-point of history

'But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman..' (Galatians 4:4)

The conception and birth of Jesus constitute the arrival of the time, the bursting into history of its key moment.

CS Lewis makes the same point in his poem, The Turn of The Tide

He pictures a 'deathly stillness' spreading from Bethlehem to Jerusalem to 'the islands and the North', to Rome, to Carthage and the Nile. He imagines the earth sending out a signal to the rest of the cosmos, 'Great Galactic lords' wondering and whispering whether this was the end of their story and their glory. He captures the moment at which the tide was neither going in nor going out, the moment of stillness before momentous change. And then suddenly the tide begins to rush in again, life returns and pulsates into space. The constellations are shaken, the spheres give out their music once more, but this time new and different. Heaven dances, and 'A shiver of re-birth and deliverance on the Earth went gliding. 'Leprechauns dance, the Pheonix rises- astronomy and mytholodolgy, science and science fiction are oriented towards 'the cry of the One new born'. It is his way of saying that here, in this event, something decisive has happened to the constitution of the cosmos. This is the hiatus of hitory and the turning-point of time.

He has become one of us....

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A shiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds have changed whisperin the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass when a child is born
~~
And all of this happened
Because whe world is waiting
Waiting for one child
Black, white, yellow, no one knows
But a child that would grow up and turn tears to laughter
Hate to love, war to peace
And everyone to everyone's neighbour
Misery and suffering would be forgotten forever
~~
Its all a dream and illusion now
But it will come true, some time soon somehow
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

The hammer and the nail

I had a thought while watching some very talented youth practise their mime performance this week... God picked Joseph, a carpenter to parent Jesus. Jesus was raised around hammers and nails. How familiar he must be with them. Yet, when He died on our behalf, it was to nails and a hammer that He surrendered His hands to. Did God plan it that way? or was it a sheer coincidence?

This Christmas, let's not forget why Jesus came and let's offer Him worship so heartfelt, as we come and adore Him, Christ the Lord

My son, the artist!

Matthew has started with art. Like most kids, he loves playing with crayons and colour pencils. He also likes putting stickers on top of other stickers. I think they are gorgeous, and I'm super proud of my son's art. So, here I am, showing off :) and I don't care what you think of his art or me showing off :)

However, one thing annoys me a lot. Whenever he picks a colour, I will need to hide the box with the rest of the crayons or colour pencils. Otherwise, he will not draw at all but his thought would be so focused on getting more crayons. Hold them all without using them. The grass is greener on the other side, as if all the other colours are nicer.

Makes me think. Is that like us in two ways? With money, our minds so focused on getting more money, more and more without really experiencing the blessing money brings to us and others. With everything else, we keep striving to get to something better, something else (the grass being greener on the other side) without enjoying what God has already given to us now.

Just like me hiding the rest of the colours from Matt so he can enjoy drawing with the colour he has, does God also need to withhold certain blessings from us so we will learn to appreciate what we have now? I don't know. Just a thought.

Imagine me without You

I was talking to a friend yesterday. She is going through some real tough times and facing some doubts about God's goodness in her life. Whether or not we're Christians we face tough times.

The standard question is 'Why did God do this to me?' Well, He didn't! Our pain could be because of our own doing, other people's doing, Satan's doing, the nature of this fallen world or it's just simply because we can't see the big picture now. God doesn't control our or other people's choices. Though God does close certain doors in our lives when walking through the door is not good for us but we can't see it at the time.

Being a Christian does not guarantee life smooth sailing but it does guarantee joy, peace, meaning and hope as we choose to surrender and submit to God as Lord.

'Lord, I do not understand why I'm going through what I'm going through but I TRUST that You love me and You CAN and WILL turn this pain and evil in my life into something good and beautiful'

The truth is, we either have that attitude or we be depressed everytime something bad happens (which is most of our lives really).

Tim and I have have been through and still are going through some real pain in our lives. But I would NOT for one moment choose to live without God. After having tasted His goodness and faithfulness in our lives especially during the hard times, I can't imagine living without God. God has always been faithful to hold us and give us peace, enable us see hope even in the darkest situation. In the end, He always turns the ugly into something beautiful in our lives. What a prviledge to be able to live like this. Thank you my Lord.

Allow me to share this beautiful song with you. 'Imagine me without You'- Jaci Valesquez

What must Mary be thinking?

I was listening to a Christmas choir sing last Friday and these thoughts entered my head. Could Mary have had doubts?
First an angel appeared to her (while she was unmarried and a virgin) telling her she'd been chosen by God to be PREGNANT. What would her parents think?

Just as she was getting ready to have the baby, she was told by the government to travel a long distance (for the census) at the time of her baby's due date! Surely God is in control of the timing.

When she arrived at Bethlehem, the baby was going to come! BUT there was no room! They were given a stable...with the animals. (we have six dogs, I would never imagine trying to sleep with them in the same room) If this was God's plan, couldn't God at least cause the baby to stay in there for a little while more till they got home? Wouldn't God at least provide a room for the baby to be born in?

After her baby was born, she was told to run for their lives! The king wanted her baby dead!

To obey God, she had to be torn away from her reputation, her family, her comfort, her pride and now she couldn't even have a home. She had to be a refugee! (I would seriously have some doubts at this stage if I were Mary)

Then everything seemed OK. Her son grew to be a lovely lovely boy. But when He became and adult, He started doing some radical stuff and saying some outrageous things! Some loved Him, Some thought He was crazy and some thought He was demon possesed! Can you imagine what the friends and relatives would say at family gatherings?

Then, the most unthinkable happened. He was killed as a criminal in the worst possible way! Imagine her pain as a mother and her doubts as a believer of God and His promises.

Her world must have crumbled when He died. All her dreams, all her expectations of how her Son woud save mankind. Everything she ever believed in...now...DEAD.

The 3 days that followed must have been really depressing for Mary. Just imagine! Could her head be filled with doubts? Would mine if I were her? Definitely!
He did say He would rise again in 3 days, could Mary believe that? If I were her, would I be able to find any faith left in me to believe some more?

On that Sunday morning,...the tomb is empty! He's NOT IN HERE! He has RISEN!!!'

'PRAISE THE LORD for the ressurection! Hallelujah! It's all TRUE! It's ALL TRUE!!! Everything the angel said was TRUE!!! Praise the Lord! My Baby, He IS GOD! Everythign He said WAS TRUE!!!He Has come to save all mankind!' YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How her joy must have been complete, how heart must have burst with Praise and Worship for the God who chose her to be blessed above all women!

~~
It really got me thinking...we believe God tells us to do something. Things don't go in the way we expect them to if we're 'blessed'. People judge us, family members talk about us, worrying about us. We doubt, we worry but...

Do we still persevere or do we give up? Do we harbour bitterness in our hearts towards God? Do we stop listening to and obeying God? Do we trust Him to know what He's doing? Even when things go wrong, do we trust His providence that He could make something beautiful out of it?

It's not easy to obey God. It's not always covered with blessings (as we see blessings). It involves sacrifices, misunderstanding from those we love, pain and sometimes our dreams crushed.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (Matthew 16:24)

The Incarnation (2)- So what is Jesus/God like?

God is humble. We would probably not guess that God is humble. Humility is not an obvious feature of gods/or a God, so we think. Remember our distorted perceptions of God? Because of our pride, we think it's so great and glorious to be BIG and UP there. We expect God to be like that.

Yet in the Incarnation, God emptied Himself by taking the form of a slave and subjected Himself to a slave's death (drawn from Phil 2:7-8). The Incarnation does not happen despite God's transcendent greatness, but because of His inherent humility. It is not a temporary exception to His greatness but a permanent demonstration of it.

Oliver O'Donovan comments:

Naturally it is paradoxical to speak of God as humble and self-effacing but that is simply what the gospel teaches us to do, forcing us to revise all our natural conceptions of God's glory. God does not cease to be glorious and awe-inspiring and majestic because He is humble; it's our mistake to imagine there is no place for lowliness within true majesty. TRUE MAJESTY IS NOT AFRAID TO STOOP, BECAUSE IT CANNOT BE DESTROYED OR LESSENED BY STOOPING.

Wow! Think about that! God is so great, He is not afraid to stoop. How great is our God! O Come let us adore Him! My heart wells up with praise and worship when I read that..is yours?

God, our help, who helps us be helpful to the helpless

I went out to meet someone today who needed some advice. After I had parked the car, I prayed that God would help me be helpful to the person I was meeting.

I met the her and we sat down for lunch. She started sharing and I had no idea what she should do. Like a wise person (smile), I started asking questions and let her talk more.

and then..I suddenly remembered a podcast I was listening to YESTERDAY (what a timely message) dealing with this SAME issue. In fact, the postcast gave some practical handles on how to deal with the issue.

So when she had finished, I shared what I heard on the podcast with her. It was spot on! Once again God proved to be faithful! We ended with a prayer. And we both left the lunch with our hearts filled with hope from above.

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. (Psalm 33:20)

When you feel that you can't help those around you. Look to God..He is our help and He will be faithful.
